Dusting off my Silhouette/First Communion Card

Years ago, I purchased a Silhouette digital cutter. I loved my cutter…but over the past few years, found that I was using it less and less, for various reasons. I would go in from time to time and use it, pull down a design and modify it, but I hadn’t updated the software in a very long time, and it was slow and cumbersome and not working well (the software, not the machine….the machine is working mostly just fine). This weekend I decided to go for it. I went to view the update, and my machine is so old that it is no longer on the list of models supported. I figured, who cares, it’s not working well right now anyway, what does it matter? And downloaded the new software. I was so excited when I tried a design out and my machine worked with this new software. I was concerned that, since my model was not listed, the software would not communicate to my cutter. While I have a bit to learn about the software on this new version, it’s okay! I just saved myself a bundle of money on a new machine by updating the software.

My niece recently made her First Communion, and due to the Covid restrictions and some of our own personal decisions, she unfortunately did not have a lot of family physically present to support her and celebrate this sacramental moment. I decided this called for a very special card. In my Silhouette library, I had a few designs I could make work. I ultimately decided on an ornate layered cross design by Lizzie Mayne. Three layers, and I cut each layer out in a mirror cardstock, using a charcoal on the bottom layer, an off white for the middle layer, and a rose gold (what girl doesn’t love rose gold?) for the top ornate layer. I adhered the three layers together using a liquid glue (gives you some wiggle room when putting the layers in place). I then cut a mat out of a rose gold shimmer card stock using Elizabeth Craft Designs Dashing Rectangles die set. This I turn adhered to a charcoal glitter card stock. This whole thick card front was then attached to a white card base I had previously created. I added a few gems to the center and the outer “corners” of the cross. On the inside, I stamped “blessed” (Honey Bee Stamps”) using Dew Drop Brilliance Galaxy Gold ink, and finished it with the sentiment “Let Your Light Shine” (Close to My Heart) in black amalgam ink (Gina K. Designs). I hope she loves her card as much as I do!

As always, thank you for stopping by, and I hope this inspires you to go out and create something!
